The Melton family had a wake-up call when they were involved in a wreck. Their experience changed the way they looked at estate planning. Read their story here.
The will is one of the most important documents you can own. Think of planning a will as securing the financial future for you and your family.
An up-to-date will gives you the control to distribute your estate according to your wishes.
The benefits of a having a will:
• You can express your values to your heirs
• Care for your heirs according to their needs
• Make a gift to the Baptist ministries that have meant so much to you and your family.
When should I update my will?
• Births
• Marriage or divorce
• Death or incapacity of a named beneficiary in your will
• Changes in your personal net worth
• Change of your needs or your beneficiaries’ needs
• Change of residence
The Foundation reimburses a portion of your legal fees if you choose to leave a 10 percent charitable gift, at least half of which must be to a Baptist ministry and may include the Southern Baptist church where you and your family worship each week.
Steps to Take
When you contact the Foundation, there is a five-step process to establish your plan. You will:
- Meet with a Foundation staff member and complete an estate planning worksheet
- Have your attorney of choice draft your estate plan based on your estate planning worksheet
- Review and approve documents
- Sign your documents and pay your attorney
- Receive reimbursements of legal fees upon confirmation of your designated gift to a Southern Baptist ministry.
